DEFORESTATION
Definition of deforestation according to Wikipeda:
"Deforestation is
the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is
thereafter converted to a non-forest use. Examples of deforestation
include conversion of forestland to agriculture or urban use."
We do not need to explain the devastating effect
caused by the world-wide ongoing deforestation. To this end we may advise
the visitor of our web site to read what is written in

What counts is what we, - as builders of tropical
hardwood homes -, can do about it. First of all we could terminate
our business, but this will have serious consequences for all of our
staff and workers. Secondly we could increase our prices with 5-fold
and contribute the extra funds to the Indonesian reforestation
program. The question which immediately raises is: Who will buy our
houses? We could source different type of hardwood species which are
not (yet) on the endangered wood species list. However, sadly
enough, this will not last long. We came up with many more ideas, but
none of them proved to have a solid sustainable foundation, that is
to say,........... one of these ideas may work well.
This is what we would like to achieve:
Starting mid 2011 we will slowly and gradually
start to abandon Indonesian hardwood for our houses and replace
this with Dura Pine ©. Dura Pine
© is the brand name of the treated end
product of the Radiata Pine tree. A Pine tree is a fast growing
medium-density softwood tree which is abundantly available in New
Zealand, Australia and the USA. We have entered into an agreement
with a supplier to
buy this - imported - wood which originates from sustainably wood felling concessions in New
Zealand with a strict wood control policy that ensures the wood is
solely sourced from FSC or PEFC certified selected plantations in
New Zealand's North Island. The Radiata Pine tree plays a significant role in meeting the
ever-increasing demand for sawn timber. As a well-managed plantation
tree, it can provide a renewable resource
providing dependable supply for generations to come due to the
fact that Radiata Pine is one of the world's most widely planted
plantation species and has the ability to grow to a large diameter
faster than almost any other tree species. Though Indonesia is a country
with a vast amount of tropical hardwood felling concessions our idea
may look like selling snow to Antarctica, however, we are of the
belief that with this action we contribute to solve a serious
world-wide environmental problem while our prices will remain
competitive compared to the world market prices due to the low
overhead costs in Indonesia. Click

specifications.
The Pros: We will seriously contribute to the
saving of world's endangered tropical forests.
The Cons: Since we need to import the timber,
prices for raw materials will be higher compared to some locally
available hardwood. As a result the prices for our prefab houses will
increase. However, we are of the belief that any client will be
ready to pay this little price to safeguard world's environment.
Though the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry yet
allows the export of its tropical hardwood, be it to certain maximum quotas,
there are signs that the Indonesian Government may ban the export
and local use of all Indonesian tropical hardwood by the year 2016. At that
time we are ready for it.
